We typically use 3" minus base topped with 1" minus surface gravel from local quarries. For a smoother finish or a horse-friendly surface, we'll use 3/4" clean limestone instead.

A properly built drive (compacted base, real crown, drained ditches) goes 7–10 years before it needs a meaningful refresh. A bulldozed-and-dumped drive goes 1–2 winters.

A typical 500-ft new drive at the standard 12-ft width takes 2 to 4 days. We walk the route, cut and shape the subgrade, drain it, then lay rock. Side-hill cuts, switchbacks and multiple culverts add days.

Most driveway failures are drainage failures, not rock failures. If water runs down the drive instead of off it, the rock migrates and the subgrade turns soft. So we set the 4 to 6% crown, cut side ditches and place culverts under the low spots first. Rock goes on last, base compacted in lifts, surface gravel on top.

Often, yes. If the route works and the base is still there, a re-grade and re-rock is usually a one-day job and costs less than new construction. We build new when the route itself is the problem: bad grade, no place to shed water, or no usable base.

That range covers typical 12-ft wide gravel drives across the southern Missouri Ozarks. Price runs high with side-hill cuts, multiple culverts, soft subgrade needing fabric and extra base, and long rock hauls. It runs low on straight runs with good drainage, a quarry within 10 miles, or an existing drive that just needs a refresh. Drives over 1,000 ft scale down per foot.

No, and the difference is why drives fail. Driveway excavation is the dirt work underneath: walking the route, stripping topsoil and soft material, cutting and shaping the subgrade with a four to six percent crown, and setting culverts and side ditches so water leaves the drive. Only then does rock go on, base compacted in lifts with surface gravel on top. Dumping gravel on unprepared ground gets you one or two winters.
